In 1985, Senator Jesse Helms proposed the elimination of...(tax exemption status) for religious groups that practice witchcraft or satanism, alleging that those practices lead to violent and unlawful behavior and "should not be subsidized -directly or indirectly- by the U.S. taxpayers."-excerpt Univ. San Francisco Law Review (August 1986)
In that same year as the Helms proposal, Wicca/Witchcraft was declared a legal religion by a Virginia federal court judge. Nearly 12 years later, many Wiccan churches have been awarded tax exempt status as legal religious bodies. Wicca/Witchcraft has been a valid religious choice for over a decade now, so why are we still hearing these stories?
"My spouse is filing for full custody of our children citing that I am a bad parent because I am Wiccan."-custody case, New York,(1995)
"My son was told he could not wear his pentacle at school because it was a symbol of evil."-school dress code-Indiana.(1996).
"My daughter was told she could not wear black clothing in school on Samhain as dictated by our Keltria Tradition."-school dress code-Illinois,(1996).
"The principal in my daughter's school began questioning students who wear black if they were Satanists."-school issue after two teen suicides-Pennsylvania,( Sept.1996).
"Far from harmless, witchcraft is the work of Satan."-Dr Billy Graham column (headline October,1996).
The good news is that some of these cases were resolved in a positive manner. The mother in New York has retained joint custody of her children and the school officials in Pennsylvania now know that black clothing is not grounds for interviews on religious preference.
But we still have a long way to go toward real religious acceptance in the public's eye. Witness these very recent statements:
"As we view the ties between the Wiccan organization and the abortion industry, the conclusion will become obvious: The promotion of abortion is not just a political issue for members of Wicca; it is part of a religious agenda - the religion of witchcraft and child sacrifice.'-Jay Rogers-Champion newsletter,(1995-present).
"We used to burn witches because they were the deviates of the time but it turned out that they were mentally ill, and as we understood that, we evolved and we were able to help them."-Mark Klaas (Gordon Elliot show 4/9/97).
What can we do when we are confronted with such ignorance and bigotry? Where do we begin?
The Witches' Voice believes that education is the key to the door of understanding and awareness. We write letters to the media and send information packages out to the schools and government officials. The Witches' Voice web site provides FREE OF CHARGE a resource of legal information, basic educational documents and a networking center promoting the truth about the religion of Witchcraft.
But we still need to do more..much more..and we are asking YOU to help....
Your sponsorship donation of just $25.00 will allow The Witches' Voice to:- Send out 80 letters to media sources;
- or provide 12 information packages to schools and police departments;
- or print 833 brochures on the facts about Witchcraft;
- or maintain the TWV web site for two days on the internet.
More importantly, your $25.00 can go directly to another Pagan or Witch who is facing discrimination and has no where else to turn.
This is a chance to make a real difference.
So, let YOUR voice join with in with others to speak out-in the schools, in the media, in the government and in the courtroom...
Please consider becoming a sponsor of The Witches' Voice today. Together we WILL be heard...

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR LIPS SAY YES
AND YOUR WALLET SAYS NO!
First of all, we would like to thank all of you that have sent financial support. We literally could not continue without you. No one here at the Witches' Voice receives any salary or compensation (except for your kind comments that continue to fuel our enthusiasm) for our many hours of volunteer work. Our most excellent web master has poured hundreds of hours into making the Web site the wonderful resource that it is. Here we offer free of charge documents that are the direct result of much time and research from many dedicated Witches over the years. Here we answer hundreds of pieces of E-mail, respond to questions from Witches and the general public, and keep you informed on issues that may threaten your right to religious freedom. We have established the Live Feedback Forum where you can talk to other Witches and network with each other across the cyber-nation, free from "flames". Perhaps here you have found that you are not alone after all..
What is this worth to you? Each of us must decide what value we put on a service that we receive. If we deem the price too high, we simply do not avail ourselves of that service. However, if something is truly important to us, if it is connected to our sense of well being and if it may in fact, be essential to our very right to EXISTENCE, then don't we do anything we can to make sure it continues to be there for us? Thousands of people write letters to government agencies on topical issues, give hundreds of dollars to no-kill animal shelters and donate goods to food kitchens and charitable causes each day. Why? Because they realize that without support, some of the things that are important to their quality of life and the quality of the lives of other feeling beings may disappear. And they CARE about these things ..for themselves, for their children and for the whole web of life. They consider these things valuable.
Lip Service is defined as "an avowal of advocacy, adherence, or allegiance that goes no further than expression in words." A great many people are willing to offer lip service on important issues, but words do not pay the bills. Words can inspire and enlighten. Words communicate ideas and promote understanding. Words can heal and encourage. But words cannot be used as a medium of exchange when there are fliers to be printed, stamps to be bought and server bills to be paid. Wimpy's offer to "pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" does not work outside of the cartoon channel.
Many of us send financial support to a "Save the Species" foundations. What about the "Save the Witches" organizations? A good many Witches have in the basis of their Tradition, tenets that discourage any exchange of money for teaching the Craft. The Witches' Voice does not teach the Craft, it PROTECTS the Craft from those who would have us once again disappear, if not from the earth, at least from public view and from having any impact on society. But what we know and what we do for the good of all is too important to be snuffed out again. We refuse to be silent and we refuse to be ignored and we will "not go gently into that good night." The Witches' Voice brings topics that would threaten the lives and freedoms of Witches into the public and political forums where they can be addressed and confronted. We give out information FREE OF CHARGE to all who request it and offer legal and financial support to Witches who are being discriminated against because of their beliefs. What is this worth to you? What value do you place on this service?
For those who think that Witches are becoming "too political"... who think religious issues have no place in politics... we suggest you tune into the "700 Club" some fine morning. The folks there are enjoying a tax exempt status as a religious organization while they spend half their time promoting their political agenda to the public and most importantly, to the politicians running for office. They have a large amount of money to promote their views of what a "Christian society" should be... and I don't think Witches are going to play a big part in their ideal world, do you? Are they interested in the "good of all", or just the good of those who believe as they do? So to those who think Witches should not be involved in the political arena... we pose this question: "Do you mean to say that Witches should not demand the same rights as other Americans enjoy?"
Any organized effort implies "working together". As some have so charmingly put it, getting Witches to work together is like trying to herd cats. The Witches' Voice is completely open to all traditions of Witchcraft as well as Wicca and Paganism. It is the rights of ALL Witches/Wiccans and Pagans that we are concerned with. The good of ALL...the rights of ALL... the protection of ALL...
If things are going fine in your community, if you are not being targeted by your neighbors, if your children are not harassed at school... do you worry about Witches in other areas of the world? The Witches' Voice does... Can you openly stand in court and defend your rights as a Witch to practice your religion... The Witches' Voice will...Can you register in the hospital or other place where a "religious preference" is required on the form as a Witch... or do you fall under the "other" category... well, we're working on that one, too.
We at the Witches' Voice are devoting our time, energy and yes, our own money, to issues that threaten the peace and well being of all Witches because we see value in it. We share a vision of a society where we can openly take our place, share our gifts and worship in ways that have meaning for us ..a world where our children are safe, our voices are heard and "broom closets" are merely convenient utility areas for cleaning supplies. What is such a society worth to you?
Basically you have 2 choices:
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS and EDUCATE YOUR TOWN!
or
STAY IN THE BROOM CLOSET until THEY COME FOR YOU!
Those of you that are "in the fight" will ALWAYS
have our deepest respect and eternal gratitude...
Oh yes, to answer the question posed in the header of this article: "What happens when your lips say yes and your wallet says no?"
The price of silence may be too high.
Again, Thank You for your help
and Blessed Be!
